Online Custom Brokers

It’s true that most people have little or no idea of what a Customs Broker is or what he does. Although their history dates back to the late 1700's, yet very little is known about custom brokers online. The truth is that they achieve the highest professional degree recognized in the transportation industry and are able to earn a very respectable income.

Online custom brokers are involved in a profession that is engaged in the 'clearing' of goods for importers and exporters through customs barriers. This is a highly specialized task consisting of preparing of the documents and/or electronic submissions. There is lots of calculation and usually the payment on behalf of the client of taxes, duties and excises. A custom broker also has the duty to facilitate communication between the importer/exporter and governmental authorities.

Customs brokers online should be well familiar with the Tariff Schedule, a listing of duty rates for imported items, and the regulations governing importations. An importer seeks advice regarding the country of origin marking requirements or the precise paperwork requirements for a shipment subject to quota/visa requirements from the custom broker. Getting well familiar with the requirements of each type of import can avoid costly delays or seizure of the merchandise.

Many online customs brokers are specialized in certain types of transactions, such as clothing, perishables, or clearing the crew and manifest of large cargo vessels. A Customs broker is required to clear an examination and background check in order to become to become licensed. They are not government employees and should not be confused with Customs agents. They may have independent businesses or may be employed by shipping lines, importers, exporters, trade authorities and customs brokerage firms.

Different countries have different agencies to license the custom brokers. For example, in the US, they are licensed by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, whereas in Canada, Canada Border Service Agency does the job of giving them license. Australian Customs Brokers are licensed by the Australian Customs Service. However, there is no licensing system within the European Union for the online custom brokers. One interesting fact is that the license is issued for life. Be sure to hire the right custom broker as many importers are unaware that they may charge you multiple times for the same entry in case they need to go back and make a correction or change to the entry. So make sure that you are not being unfairly assessed.
